THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-LOVE

One lesson I’m learning each day is to love me. As cliché as this may sound, it’s something I’ve made a decision to do. It is also something a lot of young people struggle with- self-love. We are always willing to look at our negative parts- what we can’t do, the mistakes we’ve made, the failures we’ve caused but not quick to highlight our successes, to embrace our uniqueness, to appreciate our ‘differences,’ it could be in terms of race, background, experiences…they are all part of our story.

If you are not going to cheer ‘you,’ who will? If you are not going to believe in yourself, who will? If you don’t love you, who will? Ask yourself these questions. The time has come for us to come up higher, to think straight, to believe in ourselves. You can’t beat a young person who believes in his or herself. They are unstoppable, there’s absolutely nothing they can’t achieve when they’ve purposed in their minds that they can do it, that they’re capable. That’s what I want my readers to do today, purpose in your mind that you are going to believe in yourself no matter what. Even when things aren’t going as planned, even when your so called ‘friends,’ leave, in the midst of all the hate and doubt; ‘I will believe in me,’ ‘I can do it,’ ‘It is possible.’

What you tell yourself each day is who you are. People’s opinions of you do not matter. They carry no weight, what is important is what you tell that person in the mirror each day- that she is ugly or beautiful, that he is great or average, that she is smart or dumb, brilliant and amazing or mediocre. When you begin to internalize such beliefs, they materialize into your everyday life. Every great thing we celebrate today started with a thought which then materialize into actions. Thoughts become things. What you focus on focuses on you. If you focus on success, hard-work, family, health, it will come into fruition in your life.

Sit down, take out a pen and a journal and do some self- examination. Evaluate where you are at in your life at the moment, what mistakes you’ve made, experiences you’ve gone through then turn to a blank page and write down what you want to be, what you want to do, what you want to be known for, the legacy you want to leave behind. Look at this page each morning, read those affirmations aloud, make it a ritual and begin to do things that align with your dreams. It works, and I know from experience. Whenever you feel an element of doubt or unbelief, pick up that book or remember those good things you wrote about yourself, think of your future. Or simply, put on your favourite music and dance like no one is watching- whatever it takes to make you feel happy and encouraged. When you do this, you obtain more strength and courage to keep going forward. There will be bad days, that is the reality of life but what counts is what you do on those bad days, the attitude you have.

Look that person in the mirror and tell that person ‘I will not be a statistic,’ ‘I will not be average,’ ‘I am great’ ‘I am intelligent.’ No one can pull you down other than yourself. The human mind is such a powerful tool. Use it for good, to radiate positivity, to help mankind. You are capable of achieving the best. Do not settle for less. Young people know your worth and stick to it. Don’t compromise your standards for no one. Let people know your values and know they can’t cross certain boundaries.

Self-love does not mean dismissing your mistakes, no, it’s acknowledging them and making a deliberate choice to love you with all your flaws, insecurities, mistakes and choosing each day to do better, be better and ultimately live each day being you, doing you, fulfilling your purpose- what you were called to do on earth and ignoring the background noise. Stay focused, there are so many distractions in today’s world, don’t let it deter you from your goals and the amazing future that lies ahead of you.
